The importance of writing a good resume

Did you know there is actually a right and wrong way of writing a resume? In this blog post, we go over a few tips on how to nail your resume the first time!





1. Why is it so important to get your resume right?


Your resume is your first way of presenting yourself to a potential recruiter or hiring manager. There is a focus on how it is set out, the tonality, spelling and grammar as much as there is on your career history. Recruiters and hiring managers receive many job applications when going through the hiring process and, if you want to stand out, you have to put your best foot forward in your resume by ensuring it is relevant, professional and it clearly describes your experience.


2. Are there certain mistakes that you tend to see pop up more commonly than others?

  • Spelling and grammatical errors are very common in Resume applications.

  • Cover Letters that reference the wrong job that they have applied for is also common.

  • Inconsistency around font and size of font as well as spacing.


3. One page resumes - is this a necessity or just personal preference?

The preferred maximum number of pages is five. This depends on your experience and is usually relative to your seniority and industry that you work in.


4. What do you think makes up a perfect resume?

  • A good, but short summary describing what you are looking for and your key strengths.

  • Skills snapshot/overview

  • Any relevant certificates or degrees to the role

  • Employment history that is clearly outlined and describes the duties that you undertook in each role

  • Achievements in each role (one or two bullet points)

  • Reasons for leaving your last role (relevant to Senior roles or to explain gaps)


5. If you’re unsure about how to fix up your resume, where would you suggest starting?

There are plenty of free templates online that can assist with your resume or you can seek a more professional service such as https://placeme.com.au. If you do seek professional service, ask the company what experience they had with building resumes, recruitment and hiring.

I would also ask for feedback from potential hiring managers and get their feedback as well.


6. Please feel free to add in any further points you think are relevant

  • Make sure your LinkedIn is up to date and aligns with your resume.

  • If you have Social Media, I would suggest putting it on private as potential employers look at you online

  • Follow up with a phone call after sending your resume, it shows that you are interested in the position.
